Rising over the shrine of the Budu Medura is the Makara Thorana — a great golden arch issuing from the open mouths of two makara, the mythical creatures of Sinhala temple art that combine the strength of many animals in one guardian form. At its crest is the fierce protective face known as the kibihi muhuna, and around it, ascetics and deities look on reverently from banks of cloud.බුදු මැදුරේ ප්රතිමා මණ්ඩපයට ඉහළින් නැගී සිටින්නේ මකර තොරණයි — සිංහල විහාර කලාවේ එන මකර රූප දෙකක විවෘත මුඛයන්ගෙන් නික්මෙන රන්වන් තොරණකි. එහි මුදුනේ ආරක්ෂක කිඹිහි මුහුණ දක්නට ලැබෙන අතර, වටේට වලාකුළු අතරින් තවුසන් හා දෙවිවරුන් ගෞරවයෙන් බලා සිටිති.Über dem Schrein des Budu Medura erhebt sich das Makara-Torana — ein großer goldener Bogen, der den geöffneten Mäulern zweier Makara entspringt, jener Fabelwesen der singhalesischen Tempelkunst, die die Kräfte vieler Tiere in einer Wächtergestalt vereinen. An seiner Spitze wacht das als Kibihi Muhuna bekannte Schutzantlitz, und ringsum blicken Asketen und Götter ehrfürchtig von Wolkenbänken herab.
Within the arch, the seated Buddha image is framed by a radiant halo of many colours, with the assembly of disciples painted behind. The makara arch is a threshold: passing beneath it, the devotee symbolically leaves the ordinary world behind and enters the presence of the Buddha.තොරණ තුළ, විචිත්ර රශ්මි වළල්ලකින් වටවූ බුදු පිළිමය වැඩ සිටින අතර, පසුබිමේ ශ්රාවක සංඝයා සිතුවම් කර ඇත. මකර තොරණ සීමා දොරටුවකි — ඒ යටින් ගමන් කරන බැතිමතා සාමාන්ය ලෝකය පසෙක තබා බුදුරජාණන් වහන්සේගේ සමීපයට පිවිසෙන බව එයින් සංකේතවත් වේ.Im Bogen sitzt das Buddha-Bildnis, umgeben von einem strahlenden, vielfarbigen Lichtkranz, dahinter die Versammlung der Schüler. Der Makara-Bogen ist eine Schwelle: Wer unter ihm hindurchtritt, lässt symbolisch die gewöhnliche Welt hinter sich und tritt in die Gegenwart des Buddha.
